But those efforts were unsuccessful and he was later pronounced dead.
Liability For TDCJ McConnell Unit Inmate Deaths
Thousands of inmates die in custody each year. According to the Behind Bars Data Project, “In 2001, the federal government documented 3,170 deaths in prisons nationwide, meaning there were 87% more deaths in prisons nationally in 2020 than in 2001, despite fewer people in prison in 2020.” There are a number of common causes of inmate deaths.
- Suicide
- Homicide
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Drug overdoses
Every inmate enters the jail system with a unique set of health needs. Jails must do everything in their power to provide for the health needs of each inmate. Failing to give inmates medical care is a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore prohibited by the constitution. Inmates across Texas have reported being subjected to numerous forms of improper care.
- Inmates with lingering mental health problems have reported not getting treatment.
- Inmates with chronic medical conditions have not gotten medical treatment.
- Inmates going through a drug overdose did not receive adequate care in many situations.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any inmate death. To make matters worse, jails are often not transparent about how any inmate in their care died. Jails are quick to label inmate deaths as “natural,” but this label can often be highly misleading. Many supposedly “natural” deaths involve some amount of medical neglect. This is why it is so important to seek legal counsel early on. An attorney can let you know if jail officials acted improperly and contributed to an inmate death.
